Metadata & Tags

metadata & tags can be set to more restrictive level for data integrity.

There are two types of metadata used within the TetraScience Platform.

Default metadata is collected automatically and is immutable within the TetraScience platform. Examples include File ID, Created Date, and Source Type. These fields are related to the TetraScience Platform, thus the “Created Date” pertains to when the file was first uploaded to the Data Lake, and not when the file was created by its original source.

Custom metadata is completely user-defined and editable. It is meant to enhance Default metadata by providing a flexible, user-defined process that can accommodate organization-specific information. Custom tags can be used similarly to custom metadata, and simply provide a quicker and more freeform way to organize datasets and perform batch operations.

Manage Custom Metadata Fields

Custom metadata can be accessed via the secondary dropdown nav on the upper right side.

New fields can be added by selecting "Add New Metadata Field" and specifying the field name.

Applying custom metadata to files

Custom metadata can be applied to files both automatically and manually. When setting up any new source (Egnyte, Box, IoT, DataHub) in the TetraScience User Interface, users can specify a custom metadata field and value (and/or custom tag) to attach to all incoming files from that source. Once set up, this will continue to run automatically until the user edits the source to remove the custom metadata information.

Custom metadata and tag are open to all users. It can be set to more restrictive level for data integrity based on customer's use case, for example only accessible to privileged user or admins.

Users can also manually attach custom metadata and tags to files individually or in batch on the Search page.
