Cloud Storage: Tiering and Cost Management

📘

NOTE

For Tetra hosted TDP deployments, customers aren’t charged directly for AWS storage costs.

To help provide lower-cost storage options for infrequently used data, the Tetra Data Platform (TDP) uses the Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class with Automatic Tiers enabled. This storage class automatically moves data to the most cost-effective Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) access tier when access patterns change. One tier is optimized for frequent access, one lower-cost tier is optimized for infrequent access, and another even lower-cost tier is optimized for rarely accessed data.

The TDP uses the following automatic Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering access tiers:

  • Frequent Access tier: Any object created or transitioned to the TDP begins its life cycle in the Frequent Access tier, which is optimized for frequent access. An object remains in this tier as long as it’s being accessed.
  • Infrequent Access tier: If an object isn't accessed for 30 consecutive days, the object moves to the Infrequent Access tier, which is optimized for infrequently accessed data.
  • Archive Instant Access tier: If an object isn't accessed for 90 consecutive days, the object moves to the Archive Instant Access tier, which is optimized for rarely accessed data.

Each access tier provides low latency and high throughput performance, and there are no retrieval charges. If an object in the Infrequent Access tier or Archive Instant Access tier is accessed later, it’s automatically moved back to the Frequent Access tier.

For more information, see How S3 Intelligent-Tiering works in the AWS documentation.

NOTE

The two optional access tiers that the Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class offers (Archive Access tier and Deep Archive Access tier) aren’t available through the TDP currently. Adding these optional storage classes is on the roadmap for a future TDP release.

TDP Cloud Storage FAQs

Can I put data in the Archive Instant Access tier directly, without waiting for 90 days?

No, the Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class doesn’t provide the ability to place data into either the Infrequent Access or Archive Instant Access tiers directly. Because of this limitation, all data transferred to the TDP is first placed in the Frequent Access tier. Then, the data is automatically moved to the Infrequent Access and Archive Instant Access tiers after 30 and 90 days, respectively.

What versions of the data in the TDP does Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering apply to?

Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering applies to all versions of Tetra Data stored in Amazon S3.

What TDP versions does Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering apply to?

Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering is used in TDP versions 3.3.0 and higher.

What TDP deployment types does Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering apply to?

Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering applies to all TDP deployment types.

What are the actual cost savings of using Amazon S3 Intelligent Tiering?

Cost savings vary by organization based on the data that they use and their access patterns. To get an estimate of your organization’s projected cost savings, contact your customer success manager (CSM).
