Data Capture App Beta Release Notes
The following are release notes for the beta release versions of the Data Capture App. The app provides scientists the ability to capture readings from simple instruments, such as balances and pH meters. It then automatically uploads the measurements to the Tetra Scientific Data and AI Cloud, where they can be accessed, processed and passed to downstream systems such as ELNs and LIMS.
NOTEThe Data Capture App is available in beta release currently and is activated for customers through coordination with TetraScience. For more information, or to activate the app in your environment, contact your customer account leader.
v0.2.0
Release date: 6 February 2026
TetraScience has released Data Capture App v0.2.0. The app is designed to help scientists easily capture readings from simple instruments and is the first standalone release of the app, which was previously bundled with the Data Sync Utility.
This release includes a new TetraScience AI Services integration that replaces the previous OpenAI SDK, Single Sign-On (SSO) login support, improved metadata validation, and enhanced QR code parsing.
Here are the details on what's new in Data Capture App v0.2.0.
Prerequisites
- Tetra Data Platform (TDP) v4.4.1 or higher.
- TetraScience AI Services v1.1.0 or higher activated in your TDP environment.
- (Recommended) Threads App v0.8.0 or higher activated in your TDP environment.
- One of the following supported operating systems:
- MacOS 12 (Monterey) or higher (64-bit Intel or Apple Silicon)
- Windows 10 or higher (32-bit or 64-bit)
- A camera (built-in or external) for capturing instrument readings and QR codes. For best results, a rear-facing 1080p camera is recommended
- The camera must have network access to the TDP
NOTEQR codes encode each instrument's identification information. Make sure that you place the QR code close to the instrument display. The QR code must be captured in the same image frame as the displayed reading. For more information, see Create QR Codes.
New Functionality
New Functionality includes features not previously available in the Data Capture App.
Standalone Application
The Data Capture App is now a separate desktop application that has been split from the Data Sync Utility. The Data Capture App can be installed side-by-side with the Data Sync Utility on the same machine.
AI Services (AIS) Integration
The Data Capture App now uses TetraScience AI Services for AI-powered data extraction from laboratory instrument images, replacing the previous OpenAI SDK integration.
TetraScience AI Services provides the following benefits:
- All LLM requests are routed through the TDP Gateway (
gateway.tetrascience.com), which proxies to Databricks Foundation Model APIs - Uses existing TDP authentication (
ts-auth-token,x-org-slug) - no separate OpenAI API key required - Centralized authentication through TDP credentials
- Databricks compliance posture (SOC2, HIPAA, BAA) meets most customer requirements
SSO Login Support
The Data Capture App now supports Single Sign-On (SSO) login, providing the same authentication experience as the Data Sync Utility.
Improved QR Code Parsing
QR code parsing has been updated to remove JavaScript execution for improved security.
User-Editable Metadata Fields
Customers can now enter free-text in metadata fields (such as Sample ID), and the app supports input from handheld barcode readers that work as keyboard wedges.
Serial Port Capturing
The Data Capture App now supports capturing data from instruments connected via serial port. This feature requires enabling a feature flag in the app. For more information on how to setup serial port capabilities, see Enabling Serial Port Capturing.
Enhancements
Enhancements are modifications to existing functionality that improve performance or usability, but don't alter the function or intended use of the system.
-
Optimized thread template loading: The Create Thread modal now fetches only template metadata initially to populate the dropdown, and loads full template data only after a user selects a specific template. This improves loading performance.
-
General exception handler: The app now gracefully captures errors and displays them to the user without crashing. Previously, unhandled exceptions could cause the main UI to disappear from view.
-
Retry logic for network errors: Added automatic retry with exponential backoff for
5xxserver errors when loading threads or saving data. -
Improved error messaging: The error message for missing AI configuration has been updated to provide clearer guidance on how to resolve the issue.
-
Improved thread status synchronization: Thread status changes made in the Data Capture App are now properly synchronized with TDP.
Upgrade Considerations
Data Capture App v0.2.0 is the first standalone release of this application. Previously, the Data Capture App was included as part of the Data Sync Utility.
For Customers Using OpenAI Integration
If you previously configured an OpenAI API key for the Data Capture App (when it was part of the Data Sync Utility), this configuration is no longer required. The app now uses the AI Platform integration, which authenticates through TDP.
The Data Capture App is available in beta release currently and is activated for customers through coordination with TetraScience. To start using the Data Capture App, contact your CSM or account executive.
